“To demonstrate his virility,” author Jonathan Darman wrote, in 1932 “Franklin used the same tactic [he] used in 1928 while campaigning in New York, announcing that he would go on an extensive and exhausting tour.
“In mid-September, he left Albany in a $20,000 private railcar dubbed the ‘Roosevelt Special,’ on an itinerary that would take him 8,900 miles through nineteen states—as ambitious [an] itinerary as any presidential candidate had ever undertaken.”
